Duitse ambassadeur onder de indruk van expositie in Noord-Veluws museum: ‘Erinnern und aufpassen’

Een uitgestelde opening, zo noemde directeur Erik Stotijn van het Noord-Veluws Museum de komst van de Duitse ambassadeur Dirk Brengelmann vanochtend. Stotijn had de cultureel attaché van Duitsland in maart al gevraagd om de tentoonstelling ‘Vermoorde kunst’ in zijn museum in Nunspeet te openen, maar toen gooide corona roet in het eten.

Toen de museumdirecteur onlangs nog eens informeerde naar de komst van de cultureel attaché naar het museum, kreeg hij een verrassende mededeling. Ja, hij kwam en bracht ook de Duitse ambassadeur mee. Brengelmann en cultureel attaché Thomas Walter kregen van de directeur en conservator Margot Jongedijk een persoonlijke rondleiding langs de schilderijen en andere werken van in de oorlog vermoorde kunstenaars.

Stotijn was in zijn nopjes met de komst van de ambassadeur en zijn collega. ,,We hebben natuurlijk drie maanden op slot gezeten.” Brengelmann en Walter namen ruim de tijd om de tentoonstelling te bekijken. Volgens de ambassadeur betekende die vooral ‘erinnern und aufpassen’, oftewel: onthouden en oppassen. ,,Zeer onder de indruk van het werk’’, was Brengelmann na afloop van zijn bezoek. ,,Vooral als je de verhalen erachter hoort.”

Dramatisch

En ja, de tentoonstelling heeft door die geschiedenis en die verhalen ook wel iets dramatisch in zich, erkende de ambassadeur. ,,De achtergrond is dramatisch’’, erkende Brengelmann. ,,Maar de werken hebben wel veel kwaliteit in zich.” De uitnodiging om langs te komen in Nunspeet nam de ambassadeur dan ook met beide handen aan na de coronavertraging. ,,Zeker in het kader van 75 jaar bevrijding.’’

Museumdirecteur Stotijn was vooral blij met de komst van de ambassadeur, die mogelijk ook weer de aandacht trekt van Duitse toeristen in Nunspeet en omgeving. Want de drie maanden gedwongen sluiting in coronatijd hebben pijn gedaan in de bedrijfsvoering van het Noord-Veluws museum. ,,We hebben natuurlijk wel gebruik gemaakt van alle potjes en regelingen’’, zegt Stotijn. En inmiddels lijkt het museumbezoek weer wat aan te trekken: de cijfers over juli laten een behoudende stijging zien. ,,Ten opzichte van vorig jaar hebben we in juli maar 25 procent minder bezoekers gehad. En dat terwijl we toen een populaire tentoonstelling in huis hadden van Arthur Briët, en we nu nog maar beperkt open zijn. Dan zijn die cijfers relatief gunstig.”

Sjoel in Elburg

De tentoonstelling ‘Vermoorde kunst’ is door de coronasluiting verlengd met twee maanden, tot eind november. De Duitse ambassadeur vertrok na zijn bezoek aan het museum rond het middaguur naar het museum Sjoel in Elburg. Dat is niet geheel toevallig, omdat het Noord-Veluws museum met de Elburger collega’s intensief heeft samengewerkt voor de tentoonstelling ‘Vermoorde kunst’.

Blanche Douglas Hamilton (1852-1927) woonde en werkte zo’n dertig jaar in Elspeet, waar ze bekend werd als ‘de Engelse juffer’. Teylers Museum in Haarlem had zich ontfermd over haar artistieke nalatenschap. Het grootste deel daarvan schonk het eind 2017 aan het Noord-Veluws Museum. De schenking was een goede aanleiding om een boek over deze kunstenares te maken.

Uit een veelheid van bronnen diepte auteur Kees Verbeek tal van interessante en kleurrijke details op over Hamiltons leven. Daarbij doken steeds twee vriendinnen op, ook actief in deze hoek van de Veluwe: schilder en naaldkunstenaar freule Ima van Eysinga (1872-1958) en schilder Chrisje van der Willigen (1850-1931). Ook over deze twee vrouwen heeft Verbeek opmerkelijke gegevens gevonden. Alle drie schilderden niet alleen op de Veluwe, maar reisden veel en deden daar in hun werk verslag van.

Ter gelegenheid van de presentatie van het boek is deze expositie over de drie kunstenaressen in de RABO zaal te zien.

Samenwerking van twee jubilerende musea

Dit najaar jubileren zowel het Noord-Veluws Museum (5 jaar) als Museum Veluwezoom (25 jaar), twee musea die een beeld geven van de kunstenaarskolonies op de zuidelijke en de noordelijke Veluwe. Een mooi moment op samen op te trekken. Museum Veluwezoom, gevestigd in Kasteel Doorwerth (bij Renkum), organiseert een jubileumtentoonstelling over schilders uit de periode 1900-1940 voor wie de Veluwe als inspiratiebron diende. Het Noord-Veluws Museum brengt een reprise van de expositie van kunstvereniging Pictura Veluvensis die in 1913 in Nunspeet te zien was.

Kunstenaarskolonies

Rond 1900 zijn Renkum en Nunspeet bloeiende kunstenaarskolonies. In Renkum wordt in 1902 zelfs een kunstvereniging opgericht: Pictura Veluvensis. Dat de ‘plein air’ schilders graag naar de Veluwe komen is niet zo verwonderlijk. Het is Nederlands grootste aaneengesloten natuurgebied en bestaat uit heel verschillende landschappen: heidevelden, stuifzanden, bossen, graanakkers, beekdalen, graslanden, waterpoelen en in het zuiden en oosten liggen de rivieren de Rijn en de IJssel.

Landschapsschilders in Museum Veluwezoom

De tentoonstelling in Museum Veluwezoom bestaat uit werken, die op de Veluwe zijn vervaardigd gedurende de periode 1900 – 1940, dezelfde periode wanneer de Renkumse kunstvereniging Pictura Veluvensis (1902-1935) actief is. Kunstschilders Théophile de Bock en Barend Ferwerda waren de drijvende krachten achter de kunstvereniging. Tot de schilders van Pictura Veluvensis horen onder anderen Charles Dankmeijer, Hendrikus van Ingen, Cornelis Kuypers, Xeno Münninghoff en Andries Verleur. Ter gelegenheid van het 25-jarig jubileum maakt Museum Veluwezoom een interessante combinatie van de schilders van de zuidelijke Veluwe met schilders die vooral op de noordelijke Veluwe werkten, zoals Arthur Briët, Marie Wandscheer, Jan van Vuuren, Edzard Koning, Ben Viegers en Jos Lussenburg.

Reprise van de Pictura Veluvensis expositie 1913 in Nunspeet

Pictura Veluvensis beperkte zich niet tot de Veluwezoom. Kunstenaars uit heel Nederland werden uitgenodigd om mee te doen met exposities in Renkum. In 1913 exposeerden de kunstenaars van Pictura Veluvensis voor het eerst buiten Renkum. Het gebeurt in Nunspeet, daartoe gestimuleerd door Edzard Koning, een kunstenaar die er woont en werkt en al vanaf 1906 meedoet aan de tentoonstellingen in Renkum. Anno 2019 herhaalt het Noord-Veluws Museum deze tentoonstelling. De schilderijen van de ruim 50 kunstenaars van toen zijn nu zo veel mogelijk van overal vandaan samengebracht tot een prachtig geheel. Daarop zijn vooral landschappen te zien, maar ook portretten en stillevens. Er zijn een aantal schetsboeken die laten zien hoe schilders geboeid raakten tijdens hun omzwervingen in de vrije natuur. Sommige kunstenaars beschilderden servies, maakten beelden van gips of illustreerden kinderboeken. Het jaar 1913 is in kunsthistorisch opzicht een interessant jaar. In deze tentoonstelling is te zien dat er nog geëxperimenteerd werd met nieuwe varianten op het impressionisme. De vele landschappen geven een prachtig zicht op de Veluwe van meer dan 100 jaar geleden.

In het kader van deze tentoonstellingen is een gezamenlijke jubileumpublicatie uitgebracht onder de titel ‘Pictura Veluvensis. Het Veluwse landschap in beeld’. Prijs € 7.50 in de winkel van het Noord-Veluws Museum en Museum Veluwezoom.

De op Java geboren Arthur Briët volgt vanaf 1884 zijn opleiding aan de Koninklijk Academie in Antwerpen waar hij een studiegenoot was van Vincent van Gogh. Briët sluit zijn kunstopleiding in 1888 af met de Prix d’ Excellence. Na een verblijf in Parijs, Italië en België vestigt hij zich in 1892 weer in Nederland. Hij ontdekt Nunspeet op een trektocht vanuit Laren. Vanaf 1893 is hij inwoner van Nunspeet, het kunstenaarsdorp dat zeer in trek was omdat de schilderachtige onderwerpen zich hier in ruime mate aandienden. Hij verblijft afwisselend op het Noord-Brabantse platteland, in Laren en in Nunspeet, waar hij zich ontwikkelt tot een gerenommeerd schilder van verstilde boereninterieurs.

De tentoonstelling geeft een overzicht van het werk van deze kunstenaar, die behalve intieme interieurstukken en sfeervolle landschappen, magistrale portretten schilderde. Briët dankt zijn bijnaam ‘Rembrandt van de Veluwe’ aan het feit dat hij net als zijn wereldberoemde voorganger met een sterk licht-donker contrast in zijn schilderijen werkt. Die speciale techniek is een belangrijk kenmerk van de stijl van Rembrandt, ‘clair-obscur’ genoemd, die weer geïnspireerd was door de bekende Italiaanse schilder Caravaggio. Ook in de hantering van zijn penselen is te zien dat hij veel had geleerd van Rembrandt. Briët combineert net zoals de grote meester zowel een naturalistische en impressionistische penseelstreek.

Briët woont tot zijn overlijden in 1939 in Nunspeet aan de rand van de Zoom. Daar staan de kleine armoedige huisjes van de dagloners, die het onderwerp vormen van zijn schilderijen. Om zelf de regie te houden over de opstelling voor een schilderij richt Briët een ‘schildershut’ op in zijn tuin, een replica van een zo’n boerenvertrek. Later koopt hij zo’n huisje en verplaatst het naar zijn tuin. Zo heeft hij dit huisje altijd als inspiratiebron voor de boerenbinnenhuizen, waarmee hij bekend geworden is. Briët exposeert zijn werk in binnen- en buitenland en verkoopt schilderijen in zowel Sint Petersburg als Parijs. In Nederland is werk van Briët te vinden in het Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, het Centraal Museum te Utrecht, het Drents Museum te Assen, het Singer Laren, het Noord-Veluws Museum en diverse andere musea.

In de tentoonstelling is een prachtige selectie kunstwerken van Arthur Briët te zien uit een tiental museumcollecties en ruim dertig privécollecties.

animation_offset=””]Voortbordurend op het succes van de Marjolein Bastin tentoonstelling in het Noord-Veluws Museum wordt in de zomermaanden juli en augustus in het lokaal aan de voorzijde van de Vrije Academie een expositie ingericht met 30 originele aquarellen van Marjolein Bastin. De aquarellen zijn speciaal geselecteerd rond de thema’s ‘zomer’ en ‘Veluwe’. Hiermee krijgen bezoekers van Nunspeet, met name toeristen, deze zomer nog de gelegenheid van haar unieke werk te genieten. Marjolein Bastin wordt haar hele leven al gegrepen door de schoonheid van de natuur. Zij brengt met haar schitterende tekeningen al meer dan veertig jaar de natuur dichtbij de mensen, onder andere via haar vaste rubriek in het weekblad Libelle. Bastins werk is internationaal bekend geworden, haar wenskaarten gaan de hele wereld over. Ook aan de kinderen is gedacht, speciaal voor hen krijgt het beroemde Vera de Muis huis een plek in het prachtige oude schoolgebouw dat dateert uit 1904.

Zomer-expositie Marjolein Bastin is van dinsdag 2 juli t/m zaterdag 31 augustus 2019 te zien in de Vrije Academie, met toegang aan de Stationslaan 28, Nunspeet. Zij kiest de richting beeldhouwkunst, maar stapt over naar de afdeling Monumentale Kunst en Glas-in-Lood. Vanuit Staverden komt zij begin jaren vijftig van de vorige eeuw in contact met de schilders van de Noordwest Veluwe, zoals Ima van Eysinga, maar ook Jos Lussenburg en Chris ten Bruggen Kate.
Bovelander voert veel monumentale opdrachten uit. Ze maakt wandschilderingen, sgraffiti en glas-in-lood ramen. En ze ontwerp wand- en vloerkleden voor de raadhuizen in Apeldoorn en Epe. In 1965 verhuist zij naar Hoog Soeren na een korte tussenstop in Apeldoorn.
In haar eerste periode als schilder maakt zij magisch realistische schilderijen. Desolate landschappen worden bevolkt door fantasiefiguren en – vormen. Daarna komt er een periode van het deformeren, vooral in honderden tekeningen. Eind jaren zeventig breekt de ‘lyrisch abstracte’ periode aan en vervolgens maakt zij de serie ‘witte’ schilderijen. Sinds 2010 maakt Gaby digitale kunst. Kenmerkend voor haar beeldend werk is dat Gaby Bovelander zich altijd probeert te vernieuwen, zowel in techniek als in onderwerp.
In juni 2019 mocht het Noord-Veluws Museum een schenking van ruim dertig kunstwerken van de kunstenaar in ontvangst nemen. Als afsluiting van hun opleiding presenteren de gecertificeerde kunstenaars hun werk in de Rabozaal. Deze presentatie is een mooi voorbeeld van het samenwerkingsverband tussen de naburige Vrije Academie en het Noord-Veluws Museum.

Werneck van Haselen, Carin Janssen en Zwanet Kroese – de Graaf hebben hun opleiding voltooid bij Serob Darbinian, docent Academisch Tekenen en Schilderen.

Willy Boonen, Loes Kik – Schouten, Gabby de Muralt, Nynke Vrij en Liesbeth Werink zullen hun certificaat Schilderen ontvangen van Gerben Koldijk, docent Schilderen.

Bij Michel Bongertman, docent Kunst Ruimtelijk, heeft Jan Schaafsma zijn certificaat behaald.
