Ter gelegenheid van de tentoonstelling is een prachtig nieuw boek over het leven en werk van deze kleurrijke schilder verschenen.
Vanaf 1938 tot zijn dood in 1947 woonde Viegers – met een onderbreking van een paar jaar vanwege de Tweede Wereldoorlog – in Nunspeet, waar hij nieuwe inspiratie vond. Met gretigheid vertaalde hij de rijkdom aan onderwerpen die haar daar aantrof in schilderijen met een krachtige toets in een warm, ook wel zuidelijk genoemd, palet.
Ben Viegers staat met zijn komst naar het kunstenaarsdorp Nunspeet, in een traditie van eerdere kunstenaars, die, geheel in lijn met de rond 1900 heersende opvattingen, zochten naar de puurheid van het landleven. Eenvoudige huisjes en hun bewoners, boerenerven, het landleven: hun onderwerpskeuze weerspiegelde een geïdealiseerde authenticiteit die als tegenhanger diende van de toenemende industrialisatie met alle stedelijke hectiek van dien.
Nunspeet had zo veel kwaliteiten die kunstenaars wisten te bekoren, dat ze er graag neerstreken. Door de aanleg van een spoorlijn was vanaf 1863 de bereikbaarheid verzekerd. Met de unieke ligging te midden van akkers met boerderijen, bossen, heidevelden, zandverstuivingen en wat toen nog de Zuiderzee heette, kon het aanbod van schilderthema’s niet groter zijn. De aanwezigheid van zoveel beeldend kunstenaars had als neveneffect de oprichting in 1968 van een nog altijd intensief bezochte Vrije Academie Nunspeet.
Ben Viegers kan als schilder geplaatst worden binnen de nadagen van de Haagse School. De term Haagse School werd in 1875 voor het eerst gebruikt door een groep schilders, die rond die tijd werkzaam waren in Den Haag en hun onderwerpen realistisch uitbeelden, in het licht van het moment. Zij gaven een impressie van wat zij zagen, zoals het zich voordeed. Buiten werken had hun voorkeur. Om de vochtige Nederlandse atmosfeer waarheidsgetrouw weer te geven gebruikten zij veel dicht bij elkaar liggende grijstinten. Zij werden ook wel de Hollandse impressionisten genoemd. De hoogtijdagen van de Haagse School waren in Viegers’ tijd voorbij. De grijstinten liet hij duidelijk los, de onderwerpkeuze niet. Viegers was verantwoordelijk voor een rijke, kleurrijke nabloei van het Nederlands impressionisme.
Het grootste deel van zijn leven bracht Viegers in Den Haag door, wat misschien zijn liefde voor steden verklaarde. Een ruime hoeveelheid stadsgezichten getuigt hiervan. Water mocht hij ook graag schilderen, binnen of buiten de stad. Verder ging zijn hart uit naar het vastleggen van landelijke taferelen in de vorm van ongerepte of gecultiveerde natuur, al dan niet met aspecten van het boerenleven erbij. Hoewel hij ook portretten en stillevens schilderde, ging zijn voorkeur uit naar het werken in de buitenlucht.
Door de ogen van Ben Viegers kijken wij naar de wereld, waarvan zijn impressies ons na vele decennia nog altijd weten te raken.

De zestien tekeningen zijn met zwarte krijt gemaakt door Fré Drost. De reproducties in offsetdruk werden gemaakt in de eerste maanden na de bevrijding door N.V. Drukkerij Reclame te Rotterdam. Er werden 200 mappen met tekeningen gemaakt. Deze werden aangeboden door de autoriteiten aan het Zweedse Rode Kruis als dank voor de voedselhulp tijdens de oorlogswinter.
Fré (Freerk Johannes) Drost is één van de bekende kunstenaars, die geruime tijd in Elspeet en Vierhouten verbleef. Drost werd in 24 juli 1907 in Groningen geboren. Na een opleiding als tekenleraar ging hij zich bekwamen in het grafisch ontwerpen en de reclamegrafiek. Rond 1930 ging hij als reclametekenaar werken bij de firma Joh. Enschedé en Zonen in Haarlem. In 1939 trad hij in dienst van de Rotterdamse NV Drukkerij Reclame. Naast zijn werk als grafisch ontwerper, maakte hij ook tekeningen, schilderijen, aquarellen en portretten.
Al in de twintiger jaren had Fré Drost Elspeet bezocht. In 1968 vestigde hij zich permanent in Vierhouten, waar hij de laatste jaren van zijn leven veel werk maakte van Elspeet en Vierhouten. Op 11 oktober 1987 is hij overleden en zijn graf bevindt zich op de begraafplaats in Elspeet.
De map met tekeningen van de oorlogswinter komen uit zijn nalatenschap en zijn in het bezit van de Stichting Vrienden van de kunstenaar Fré Drost. Deze worden nu geschonken aan het Noord-Veluws Museum. De Stichting Vrienden van de kunstenaar Fré Drost is ook sponsor van het Noord-Veluws Museum.

Ter gelegenheid van de tentoonstelling is een prachtig nieuw boek over het leven en werk van deze kleurrijke schilder verschenen.
Vanaf 1938 tot zijn dood in 1947 woonde Viegers – met een onderbreking van een paar jaar vanwege de Tweede Wereldoorlog – in Nunspeet, waar hij nieuwe inspiratie vond. Met gretigheid vertaalde hij de rijkdom aan onderwerpen die haar daar aantrof in schilderijen met een krachtige toets in een warm, ook wel zuidelijk genoemd, palet.
Ben Viegers staat met zijn komst naar het kunstenaarsdorp Nunspeet, in een traditie van eerdere kunstenaars, die, geheel in lijn met de rond 1900 heersende opvattingen, zochten naar de puurheid van het landleven. Eenvoudige huisjes en hun bewoners, boerenerven, het landleven: hun onderwerpskeuze weerspiegelde een geïdealiseerde authenticiteit die als tegenhanger diende van de toenemende industrialisatie met alle stedelijke hectiek van dien.
Nunspeet had zo veel kwaliteiten die kunstenaars wisten te bekoren, dat ze er graag neerstreken. Door de aanleg van een spoorlijn was vanaf 1863 de bereikbaarheid verzekerd. Met de unieke ligging te midden van akkers met boerderijen, bossen, heidevelden, zandverstuivingen en wat toen nog de Zuiderzee heette, kon het aanbod van schilderthema’s niet groter zijn. De aanwezigheid van zoveel beeldend kunstenaars had als neveneffect de oprichting in 1968 van een nog altijd intensief bezochte Vrije Academie Nunspeet.
Ben Viegers kan als schilder geplaatst worden binnen de nadagen van de Haagse School. De term Haagse School werd in 1875 voor het eerst gebruikt door een groep schilders, die rond die tijd werkzaam waren in Den Haag en hun onderwerpen realistisch uitbeelden, in het licht van het moment. Zij gaven een impressie van wat zij zagen, zoals het zich voordeed. Buiten werken had hun voorkeur. Om de vochtige Nederlandse atmosfeer waarheidsgetrouw weer te geven gebruikten zij veel dicht bij elkaar liggende grijstinten. Zij werden ook wel de Hollandse impressionisten genoemd. De hoogtijdagen van de Haagse School waren in Viegers’ tijd voorbij. De grijstinten liet hij duidelijk los, de onderwerpkeuze niet. Viegers was verantwoordelijk voor een rijke, kleurrijke nabloei van het Nederlands impressionisme.
Het grootste deel van zijn leven bracht Viegers in Den Haag door, wat misschien zijn liefde voor steden verklaarde. Een ruime hoeveelheid stadsgezichten getuigt hiervan. Water mocht hij ook graag schilderen, binnen of buiten de stad. Verder ging zijn hart uit naar het vastleggen van landelijke taferelen in de vorm van ongerepte of gecultiveerde natuur, al dan niet met aspecten van het boerenleven erbij. Hoewel hij ook portretten en stillevens schilderde, ging zijn voorkeur uit naar het werken in de buitenlucht.
Door de ogen van Ben Viegers kijken wij naar de wereld, waarvan zijn impressies ons na vele decennia nog altijd weten te raken.

Na afloop van de succesvolle openingstentoonstelling gewijd aan Ben Viegers (Den Haag 1886 – Nunspeet 1947) werd het kleurrijke werk van deze ware ‘en plein air’ schilder hier gemist. Vanaf 31 augustus zijn er zeventien schilderijen van deze kunstenaar weer even in het Noord-Veluws Museum te zien. Een aantal van de schilderijen waren ook al op de openingstentoonstelling te bewonderen, maar er zijn nu ook enkele niet eerder geëxposeerde schilderijen tentoongesteld.

De Nunspeetse dominee Jacobs schreef:” ’s Morgens vroeg, voor achten, trok hij er op uit, met zijn spullen achterop de fiets, ’s avonds zo tegen zessen kwam hij terug met een nog nat doek. En dat eigenlijk elke dag.” Viegers wordt ook wel ‘de spontane colorist’ genoemd, vanwege zijn vrolijk, zuidelijke kleurgebruik en snelle penseelstreek.

Cursisten van de Vrije Academie Nunspeet sluiten ieder jaar hun cursusjaar af met een expositie. Cursisten van alle disciplines en alle niveaus worden in de gelegenheid gesteld om werk te exposeren.
Het werk van zeven cursisten die hun eindcertificaat hebben behaald, is juli en augustus te zien in de Rabozaal van het Noord-Veluws Museum.

Andries van der Beek (Oldebroek 1925-2018) was tot vorig jaar de nestor onder de kunstenaars op de noordelijke Veluwe. Hij was betrokken bij meerdere kunstenaarscollectieven, zoals het Zwolse Palet. Hij werkte en exposeerde ook veel samen met de schilders van de Nunspeetse Schilderskring: Jos Lussenburg, Jaap Hiddink en Chris ten Bruggen Kate.
Na voltooiing van zijn opleiding aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten te Arnhem combineerde Van der Beek zijn kunstenaarschap met zijn werkzaamheden in het onderwijs. Hoewel hij zich voornamelijk heeft toegelegd op olieverfschilderijen en aquarellen, maakte hij ook tekeningen, (wand)objecten, grafiek en illustraties. De presentatie in het Noord-Veluws Museum omvat zestien schilderijen uit verschillende periodes in zijn kunstenaarsbestaan.
Van der Beek ontwikkelde een geheel eigen visie op het landschap en gaf daarmee een eigen inbreng aan de al eeuwenoude landschapsschildertraditie. De kunstenaar liet zich ook leiden door verhalen uit de westerse Klassieke Oudheid en de Bijbel. In deze verhalende schilderijen is veel van zijn liefde voor architectuur terug te vinden. Deze schilderijen maken deel uit van een schenking aan het museum door de Stichting Chris ten Bruggen Kate van in totaal vijftig schilderijen van Chris ten Bruggen Kate. Najaar 2014 is het 100 jaar geleden dat het Vluchtoord Nunspeet in enkele weken uit de grond werd gestampt.
Het Noord-Veluws Museum werkt mee aan het project over Vluchtoord Nunspeet in samenwerking met o.a. Streekarchivariaat Nunspeet, Heemkundige Vereniging Nuwenspete en Wereldhuis Projecten. Tot half november is in het gebouw van Veluvine in Nunspeet de tentoonstelling “Onderdak in Nederland, Vluchtoorden in Nunspeet, Uden en Ede” te zien.
Vanaf 16 december 2014 tot en met 15 februari 2015 toont het Noord-Veluws Museum een kleine presentatie over Franciscus Matheus Vissers, een Belgische tekenaar in Vluchtoord Nunspeet.
Onder de vluchtelingen in vluchtoord Nunspeet bevond zich de tekenaar F.M. Vissers uit Antwerpen. Burgemeester Mackay liet Vissers in 1915 zijn portret tekenen. De burgemeester besloot het aan te bieden aan de gemeente voor de raadzaal. “Gezellig van aard als ik ben” wilde hij daar niet alleen aan de wand, maar omringd door zijn vijf voorgangers. Zo komt het dat de B&W vleugel van het gemeentehuis in Nunspeet nog steeds wordt gesierd door zes portretten van de burgemeesters uit de eerste eeuw van het bestaan van de gemeente.
Op 24 augustus 1917 is F.M. Vissers op 61-jarige leeftijd overleden.
