In het Noord-Veluws Museum in Nunspeet is van 6 april t/m 2 juni 2019 een selectie te zien uit de ruim 200 tekeningen die Teylers Museum Haarlem eind 2017 aan het Noord-Veluws Museum heeft geschonken. De Engelse kunstenares Blanche Douglas Hamilton (1853-1927) vestigde zich in 1896 of 1897 in het dorpje Elspeet.

De meeste van haar tekeningen laten het landleven op de Veluwe zien, waar zij lang woonde en werkte. Bij mooi weer tekende ze buiten. Veel van haar tekeningen hebben Elspeet als onderwerp: Elspeetse boerderijen met schaapskooien en kudden schapen, Elspeetse kinderen en vrouwen in klederdracht, wolspinnend of bezig bij de waterpomp, interieurs met ‘de haard’ enzovoorts. Maar ook zijn er veel tekeningen van haar reizen in België, Frankrijk en Israël. Douglas Hamilton woonde begin jaren 1890 een tijdje in Dordrecht, waar zij lessen nam van Ronald Larij en zij was o.a. ook werkzaam in het naburige schildersdorp Rijsoord.

Herkomst schenking
De schenking vormde een prachtige verrijking van de collectie Noord-Veluwse kunstenaars van het Noord-Veluws Museum. Een recent gevonden brief van de uit Haarlem afkomstige kunstenares Chrisje van der Willigen aan Ima van Eysinga verklaart de aanwezigheid van deze collectie tekeningen in Teylers Museum. De oom van Chrisje van der Willigen was er beheerder van het Fysisch Kabinet (1864-1878). Van der Willigen verbleef ook jaren lang in Nunspeet, waar zij optrok met Douglas Hamilton en Van Eysinga. Door haar relatie met Teylers Museum stelt zij in de brief voor dat Van Eysinga de collectie tekeningen na het overlijden van de kunstenares in 1927 in dat museum onderbrengt.

Eerdere bruikleen
In Teylers Museum verlieten de tekeningen van de Engelse kunstenares amper het depot. Het Noord-Veluws Museum had in 2015 enkele tekeningen van Blanche Douglas Hamilton in bruikleen van Teylers Museum voor de tentoonstelling Schapenschilders. Ook voor de tentoonstelling Vrouwen Uit de kunst! in 2017-2018 gaf Teylers Museum tekeningen van Douglas Hamilton in bruikleen.

Twee schilderessen
Van het einde van de negentiende eeuw tot in het begin van de twintigste eeuw bezoekt een groot aantal schilders het afgelegen dorpje Elspeet om er naar de natuur te schetsen, te tekenen of te schilderen. De heidevelden met schaapherders, schaapskudden en schaapskooien en de op het land werkende mens met paard of os en de houtakkers in de uitgestrekte bossen zijn inspiratiebronnen voor deze schilders. De meesten van deze schilders zoeken een onderdak bij pension Mouw, of bij hotel Bossenbroek. Voor de winter vertrekken ze weer naar hun riante onderkomens met ruime ateliers in Den Haag of elders.
Slechts twee schilderessen zijn dertig tot veertig jaar `echte’ inwoonsters van Elspeet geweest. De twee heel bijzondere vrouwen, die het zolang uithouden in deze kleine dorpsgemeenschap zijn: Jonkvrouw E.H.J. In Nunspeet is sprake van een unieke situatie, de academie voor beeldende kunsten en het museum direct aan elkaar gekoppeld. Kunst uit het verleden en het heden, het maken en het kijken, bijna in één gebouw. In 2018 bestaat de Vrije Academie Nunspeet 50 jaar! Ter gelegenheid van het jubileumjaar is er in het museum een overzichtstentoonstelling van kunstenaars-docenten die in de afgelopen 50 jaar les hebben gegeven aan de Vrije Academie. Tegelijk vindt in de academie het interactieve ‘waslijnproject’ plaats, waar de bezoeker (tot en met 28 augustus) de gelegenheid krijgt om zelf als schilder in actie te komen.

De Stichting Vrije Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten Nunspeet is opgericht in 1968 door een aantal uitvoerend kunstenaars uit Nunspeet en opgezet als een werkplaats voor beeldende kunst. Rond 1900 was Nunspeet een kunstenaarskolonie en tot ver in de 20e eeuw was de omringende natuur voor menig kunstenaar een ware inspiratiebron. Toen de toeloop van kunstenaars – mede door de ontwikkelingen in de moderne kunst – naar dit gebied minder werd, besloot een aantal van hen een “kunstschool” voor volwassenen op te richten, om zo meer mensen te interesseren voor de schone kunsten. Deze school vond onderdak in het oude schoolgebouw aan de Stationslaan. Jaarlijks nemen bijna 300 mensen deel aan lessen schilderen, beeldhouwen of academisch tekenen en schilderen om zo hun kunstzinnige aanleg verder te ontwikkelen, onder leiding van ervaren uitvoerend kunstenaars–docenten.

In de verrassende tentoonstelling is werk te zien van de oprichters Jaap Hiddink, Cor Vrendenberg, Guus Sundermeijer, Jos Lussenburg en Chris ten Bruggen Kate, maar ook van de latere opvolgers zoals Robert Bosari, Ingeborg ten Hoopen, Linda Verkaaik én van de huidige kunstenaars-docenten van de Vrije Academie. Om 50 jaar lesgeven in beeld te brengen hebben een aantal ‘meesters’ een gecertificeerde leerling gekozen, waarvan ook werk te zien is in deze tentoonstelling.

Als afsluiting van hun opleiding presenteren vier gecertificeerde kunstenaars hun werk in de Rabozaal van het Noord-Veluws Museum.

Marjan Wijnholds-Dost laat in een serie symbolisch-realistische schilderijen haar visie op de Schepping zien. Deliana Jansen-Meurs exposeert vijf realistisch geschilderde portretten van mensen in verschillende levensfases. Nanda Vlaming-Smit toont haar serie schilderijen ‘De Zee, een wereld van Licht, Kleur en Atmosfeer!’.

Greet Tamminga behaalt haar eindcertificaat bij docent Gerben Koldijk met een serie dynamische schilderijen over dans. Deliana Jansen-Meurs, Nanda Vlaming-Smit en Marjan Wijnholds-Dost behaalden hun eindcertificaat Academisch tekenen en schilderen bij docent Serob Darbinian.

Kunstenaarskolonies in België

België is als buurland een geliefde vakantiebestemming voor een wandelvakantie in de Ardennen of een hotel aan de kust. Minder bekend is dat in 19^e-eeuws België veel kunstenaars actief waren in kunstenaarskolonies. Het Noord-Veluws Museum, waar men de schilderijen van de kunstenaarskolonie rond Nunspeet kan bewonderen, biedt in de komende tentoonstelling een uitgebreide verkenning van de kunstenaarskolonies in België.

De bezoeker maakt een tocht door het gevarieerde landschap van België aan de hand van diverse kunstenaarskolonies. Vanuit Anseremme in de Ardennen naar het Zoniënwoud bij Tervuren, naar de heide rond Kalmthout en de Limburgse Kempen met zijn moerassen rond Genk, om via het weidse rivierenlandschap van Schelde en Dender van Dendermonde af te dalen naar de kust waar Knokke en Heist liggen. De tentoonstelling geeft een unieke kans om de Belgische realisten en impressionisten, zoals Hippolyte Boulenger, Joseph Coosemans, Alphonse Asselbergs, Louis Dubois, Isidore Verheyden, Theodore Baron, Lucien Frank en Guillaume Vogels in Nederland te kunnen (her)ontdekken.

Het Noord-Veluws Museum laat een prachtige selectie zien van bijzondere werken uit de privécollectie Barat-Venker, beheerd door Bruno Barat, kunsthistoricus en galeriehouder. De tentoonstelling toont het eigen karakter van de verschillende kunstenaarskolonies, die in de tweede helft van de 19^e eeuw zo’n enorme invloed op het Europese kunstleven hebben uitgeoefend.

De kunstenaarskolonie is een 19^e-eeuws verschijnsel dat zich vanuit Barbizon bij Parijs in Frankrijk over heel Europa verspreidde. Deze oorden speelden een grote rol in de toenmalige avant-garde van realisten. De kunstenaars verzetten zich tegen de ouderwetse historieschilderkunst en streefden naar de weergave van het ‘natuurlijke’ licht. Zij trokken de vrije natuur in om er te schetsen en ‘en plein air’ te schilderen. Er ontwikkelde zich een totaal nieuwe opvatting over het schilderen. In de jaren 1870-1880 zien we de overgang naar het impressionisme, waarbij de wisselende lichtschakeringen in losse toetsen op het doek werden vastgelegd.

Kunstenaressen op de noordelijke Veluwe 1880-1950

Vanaf 1880 komen vele kunstschilders naar de ongerepte noordelijke Veluwe. In eerste instantie lijken het alleen mannelijke kunstenaars te zijn. Minder bekend is dat ook vrouwen in deze omgeving als kunstenaar actief zijn geweest. Het is een periode waarin steeds meer vrouwen het penseel ter hand nemen om als kunstenaar van te leven. Veel van hen hebben een opleiding gevolgd aan de academies van beeldende kunsten in Den Haag, Rotterdam en Amsterdam. Andere vrouwen gaan in de leer bij een kunstenaar of gaan zelfs naar Antwerpen of Parijs voor hun opleiding. Bijzonder is de opleiding van Kitty van der Mijll Dekker; zij studeert in 1929-1932 aan het Bauhaus in Dessau. Daarna vestigt zij haar handweverij De Wipstrik in Nunspeet.

In de periode 1880-1950 werken zeker vijfenvijftig vrouwelijke kunstenaars voor kortere of langere tijd op de Noordwest Veluwe. Van het leven en werk deze vrouwen is nog weinig bekend. Deze tentoonstelling wil daar verandering in brengen! In de tentoonstelling wordt een grote diversiteit aan kunstwerken gepresenteerd van Anna Kerling (1862-1955), Anna Lehmann (1876-1956), Sientje Mesdag-van Houten (1834-1909), Blanche Douglas Hamilton (1853-1927), Ima van Eysinga (1881-1958), Marie Wandscheer (1856-1936), Hedwig Kleintjes-van Osselen (1871-1936), Stans Balwé (1863-1954), Chrisje van der Willigen (1850-1931), Suze Robertson (1855-1922), Meta Cohen Gosschalk (1877-1913), Aletta van Thol-Ruijsch (1860-1930), Kitty van der Mijll Dekker (1908-1994), Jo Koster (1868-1944), Guusje Sundermeijer (1923) en Gaby Bovelander (1931). De tentoonstelling vormt een ware ontdekkingsreis langs het werk van deze zestien vrouwen in de kunst.

De tentoonstelling laat zien dat vrouwen in die tijd niet alleen fijnzinnige bloemstillevens schilderen. Niet alleen lieve gezichtjes, maar ook karaktervolle portretten. Zij trekken ook naar buiten en maken hun eigen weergave van landschappen, dorpen en stadsgezichten en van mensen aan het dagelijks werk.

De tentoonstelling is mogelijk gemaakt door vele bruiklenen uit particuliere collecties en van musea, zoals Teylers Museum, Singer Laren, TextielMuseum, Zuiderzeemuseum en Groninger Museum. Bij de tentoonstelling verschijnt een speciale uitgave over de zestien kunstenaressen. De uitgave van Van Spijk-Rekafa Publishers bv is verkrijgbaar voor € 12,50 in de museumwinkel.
