Andries van der Beek (Oldebroek 1925-2018) was tot vorig jaar de nestor onder de kunstenaars op de noordelijke Veluwe. Hij was betrokken bij meerdere kunstenaarscollectieven, zoals het Zwolse Palet. Hij werkte en exposeerde ook veel samen met de schilders van de Nunspeetse Schilderskring: Jos Lussenburg, Jaap Hiddink en Chris ten Bruggen Kate.

Na voltooiing van zijn opleiding aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten te Arnhem combineerde Van der Beek zijn kunstenaarschap met zijn werkzaamheden in het onderwijs. Hoewel hij zich voornamelijk heeft toegelegd op olieverfschilderijen en aquarellen, maakte hij ook tekeningen, (wand)objecten, grafiek en illustraties. De presentatie in het Noord-Veluws Museum omvat zestien schilderijen uit verschillende periodes in zijn kunstenaarsbestaan.

In de jaren zeventig maakte hij series in sobere kleuren met de knotwilg als onderwerp. In de jaren negentig ontwikkelden zijn landschappen zich meer tot uitgebalanceerde, kleurrijke en verstilde landschappen. Niet alleen de Veluwe en de IJsselstreek kregen zijn aandacht, ook werkreizen leidden tot vaak monumentale schilderijen van landschappen van onder meer Afrika en Europa.

Van der Beek ontwikkelde een geheel eigen visie op het landschap en gaf daarmee een eigen inbreng aan de al eeuwenoude landschapsschildertraditie. De kunstenaar liet zich ook leiden door verhalen uit de westerse Klassieke Oudheid en de Bijbel. In deze verhalende schilderijen is veel van zijn liefde voor architectuur terug te vinden.
